Afternoon Tea At Marriott Hotel County Hall

Afternoon Tea At Marriott Hotel County Hall

marriott-afternoon-tea-6I think my new mission is to try every afternoon tea possible in London, I know a hard task, but I think someone has to do it, and I’m starting with the delicious option at the Marriott Hotel County Hall on London’s Southbank. I have to be honest I never even knew there was a hotel here, it was a little hard to find, but the Library Lounge setting really is a treat for an afternoon tea, especially if you are visiting London, as the views really are spectacular, our table overlooked the River Thames with great views of Westminster and Big Ben.

As well as the food, location can really make or break an afternoon tea, and the Marriott got high marks for their Library setting, it really was delightful and decadent, perfect actually to smother clotted cream on warm scones, and I really loved the high ceilings, wooden beams and being surrounded by old books. As did the free-flowing bubbles option, which is perfect if you are celebrating something. Jaclyn aka Bumpkin Betty and I didn’t have that excuse but we were having a good girlie catch-up, chatting about her upcoming wedding and recent trip to Paris, so it was nice to sip a glass or two of Champagne with our sandwiches and cakes.

One of the things I loved most about this afternoon tea had to be the tea selection, it’s very important that the tea leaves match the delicious food, and I loved choosing and sniffing mine from the gorgeous Twinings tea box. I went for the a super strong black tea blend that complemented the afternoon tea perfectly, but I was tempted by the rose blend as it smelt amazing.

After picking tea and enjoying a little sweetie appetizer, a vanilla pannacotta, rhubarb and strawberry pot, which was delicious, our cakes stands filled with delectable treats, one veggie for me, one gluten free for Jaclyn arrived and took up all the room, but hey when the cakes look that adorable who cares right!!!

I started with my selection of sandwiches, which were super tasty, I did love the rainbow effect when they were all on the plate, the beetroot and the cucumber and cream cheese options were my personal favourites. If you opt for the normal, meat variety afternoon tea you can expect the traditional mix of salmon, beef and watercress, egg mayonnaise, and ham and mustard.

Next up the scones, one sweet, one savoury, and both were delicious and light just as I like my scones. The sweet one was a encrusted with sugar and went perfectly with the Marriott County hall Tiptree Strawberry jam, and homemade clotted cream, which for me always has to go on after the jam so I can have more of it. For the Lyburn cheese and watercress scones, there was a herb cream cheese. Normally I’m all about the sweet, but it made a nice change to have a savoury scone in the mix.

I have left the best until last, the delicate cakes topping my tower, an apple and blackcurrant macaron, Cacao Barry ‘Equateur 76%’ Praline slice, a pistachio sponge cream cake, and a fruity tart, each one more delicious than the next. I loved them all, even the macaron, which isn’t normally my favourite.

I really don’t have any complaints about the entire afternoon tea, the service was impeccable, I loved that they didn’t rush us out and we were there a while chatting away ensuring every last drop was eaten and drunk, the food was delicious, this was traditional done well, I loved the tea selection, the free-flowing bubbles, and the views are incredible. I also thought the price was really good for a London hotel, £34 per person for the traditional afternoon tea, £36 to add Champagne, and £39 for free-flowing bubbles.

If you are coming to London for a sightseeing trip, this hotel is perfectly located and it will be an unforgettable experience.
