When you think Sophia Webster do you think girlie and pink? Well, for autumn/winter 2016 the designer has a new muse, Miss Lydia Deetz from Beetlejuice played by Winona Ryder. **Also, if you didn’t just say Beetlejuice three times I’m afraid we can’t be friends!!!** So think a Tim Burton movie – more gothic princess than Disney, which fitted in perfectly with the venue, the House of St. Barnabas chapel in Soho, which had been dressed with an installation of dried flowers and butterflies.
The collection entitled, ‘I Myself, Am Strange and Unusual’, is a little darker than normal Sophia Webster collections, it still has the florals, embroidered details and butterflies, but for autumn/winter 2016 these are in darker jewel-tone hues, including a gorgeous petrol finish. I have, to be honest, I quite like this mysterious side of Sophia Webster. There are also great new boot additions, I’m in love with the embossed leather butterfly beauties, and I adore the crystal and stone-encrusted heels above – so pretty.
There’s still plenty of Sophia Webster’s signature tongue-in-cheek wit mixed in with the Gothic vibes, with clutches featuring ‘Drop Dead Gorgeous’, ‘Die For It’, ‘Bored To Death’ and for brides-to-be there’s a beaded speech bubble bag with ‘Wifey For Lifey’.
As well as the stunning footwear and clutches, the presentation also showcased the incredible work of Edward Meadham, one-half of the now closed Meadham Kirchhoff. The designer created all the ethereal tulle and satin fashion that the models are wearing, including the Corpse Bride, who looked insanely beautiful, wearing the most incredible bridal shoes that I was a little sad I’m already married.
