Met Gala 2016: My Top 5 Best-Dressed Looks

After a few questionable themes, do you remember the year of punk? The Met Gala 2016 displayed a high-tech vibe for this year’s exhibition, ‘Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology’, and if I’m honest it produced more misses than hits as designers fell a little short when they were thinking fashion and technology, which doesn’t just mean robots and space-age, so as you can probably guess there was a lot of silver. Rather than exploring the idea of wearable technology, it seemed that the red carpet was split in two, haute couture man-made beauties and machine-inspired, in a ‘Manus vs. Machina’ vibe.

OK, so there were a lot of misses, but there are always standout looks, so here are my top five from the at the Met Gala 2016:

Met Gala 2016: Zoe Saldana in Dolce & Gabbana Alta Moda

When it comes to the Met Gala I expect big, bold gowns, and you don’t get any bigger than Zoe Saldana in this gorgeous Dolce & Gabbana Alta Moda bustier gown wrapped in tulle with a silk organza skirt embellished with multi-colored feathers. More Manus than Machina but come on just look at the craftsmanship that went into creating this stunning gown. I love it.

Met Gala 2016: Katy Perry In Prada

At first glance you might be wondering why I added in Katy Perry in this black, midnight blue, and emerald green velvet open back Prada gown, I know you guys hated it on social media, but come on, anyone who adds a Tamagotchi, you know those cute digital pets from the 90s to a gorgeous frock deserves a mention. Yep, all that enameled collage embroidery has everything from a purse to keys and what looks like machinery parts hanging from it. Whether or not it hits the mark with the theme I think this look, including her hair and make-up, is totally fabulous.

Met Gala 2016: Nicole Kidman in Alexander McQueen

Stepping away from Gucci for the night, Nicole Kidman was stunning in this Alexander McQueen silver moon embroidered chiffon dress and cape from its autumn/winter 2016 collection. Her statuesque figure killed this space-inspired frock, and come on you can’t go wrong with added sparkles can you, I loved her Fred Leighton 19th century diamond tiara and pear-shaped diamond drop earrings.

Met Gala 2016: Claire Danes in Zac Posen

When it comes to killing the theme, Claire Danes did so in this custom made fibre optic woven organza Zac Posen gown, it brought the Cinderella vibe and the technology to the red carpet and it looked beautiful, especially when it glowed in the dark. I really do this that this is the perfect hybrid of fashion and tech.

Met Gala 2016: Karolina Kurkova in Marchesa x IBM Watson

One of the most tech-savvy looks had to be this Marchesa x IBM Watson, yep the tech giant’s ‘cognitive dress’ worn by model Karolina Kurkova. The dusty blue tulle dress, which took months to make, featured ombré-painted flowers embedded with 150 hand-placed LED lights that kind of acted like a mood ring, by analysing tweets for the emotion of the fans watching the Met Gala 2016 on social media, and lighting up the embedded LED lights in corresponding colours.

Which Met Gala 2016 look was your favourite?
