As someone who loves afternoon tea, I’ve missed not being able to meet up with friends and eat delicate finger sandwiches and pile my scones with jam and clotted cream. Well, thanks to a delivery for my husband, this week we enjoyed afternoon tea from the comfort of our home thanks to Kettle & Crumb.
There have been some adjustments in the past year, the main one having to share my at-home workspace, but it is made better when he gets yummy treats sent to him, which of course, he now has to share with me.
This week was a particularly nice treat, afternoon tea delivered to our doorstep. A very unexpected indulgence that perked up lockdown 3.0. There was something so lovely about the whole thing that it would make a great gift to send to a loved one. You could even both get one and have a spot of tea over zoom.
So, what’s inside the Kettle & Crumb traditional afternoon tea? Well, everything you would expect – finger sandwiches, savouries, scones, cakes, and even a selection of tea from Tea Makers of London.
First up, finger sandwiches you get five on a selection of rye and white bread. There is Scottish kiln smoked salmon with cracked black pepper cream cheese, British honey roast ham, roast chicken breast with tarragon mayonnaise and baby spinach and free-range egg mayonnaise with mustard cress.
I let my husband try out the sandwiches, he said they were all delicious, his favourite was the salmon, but it was the savouries that he enjoyed the most. This afternoon tea comes with three different kinds of sausage rolls – British pork and caramelised onion, smokey pork and chorizo and pork and stilton, as well as blue stilton and broccoli quiche slices.
From the savouries, I devoured the delicious quiche, which were made even nicer with the instructions to warm the savouries and scones for 5-7 mins. Alongside the egg mayonnaise sandwich, it was a great warm-up to the cakes!!!
Afternoon tea from Kettle & Crumb delivered to your home
For me, this Kettle & Crumb afternoon tea really offered a luxury indulgence with its sweet treats. As well as sultana scones, you also get carrot cake, lemon drizzle and chocolate brownie. Even though this was a tea for one, each of the cakes had two slices, so perfect for sharing.
I loved them all, but if it came down to a favourite I think it would be very hard to choose between the chocolate brownie, which was perfectly squidgy, and the carrot cake with its incredible frosting.
What always makes an afternoon tea for me is the scones. Kettle & Crumb added sultana scones, along with Rodda’s Cornish clotted cream and Tiptree strawberry jam. Warming these up a little was a great suggestion, made me feel like they would if I was having afternoon tea in their cafe.
Lockdown luxury – Afternoon Tea at home
The final touch to this afternoon tea at home is a selection of Tea Makers of London tea bags. You can choose from English Breakfast, Darjeeling and Earl Grey. I haven’t had this tea brand before but I was very impressed with the aromatic flavours. The Darjeeling was particularly lovely with its fruity, floral flavour.
While this Kettle & Crumb afternoon tea was catered for meat-eaters, the eatery also does a Vegetarian option. Swap out the meat and fish sandwiches with cream cheese with cucumber on rye, chickpea houmous and grilled vegetables on classic white, and grated mature cheddar and red onion with mayonnaise on rye. Veggie lovers also get vegan sausage rolls. I’m tempted to order one for myself just to try it out!!!
I was also impressed with how it was delivered, all the packaging is sustainable and can be recycled, and the box had ice packs and wool insulation to ensure it stays fresh and protected while with the courier.
