Met Gala 2015 – China: Through the Looking Glass

The Met Gala is one of those events that always excites, I love that it always brings out amazing designer-celebrity combinations, amazing gowns, some very bold moments that just aren’t done anymore at the Oscars, and I have to be honest I do love a good theme!

This year the gala celebrated the opening of the China: Through the Looking Glass exhibition and the official dress code was “Chinese white tie”, which I definitely think needed a translation for some guests – for instance, Miley Cyrus seemed more ready for the Punk-themed gala a few years back and Carey Mulligan just looked dull.

Even though some celebs did hit the red carpet staying true to the theme – yeah for Sarah Jessica Parker, Rihanna, Emily Blunt, and Zendaya, I really think this was the most underwhelming gala for some time, I actually found it hard to get too excited about any of the looks, there were just a lot of OKs, or god awful, but saying that I have put together some silly awards for the best-dressed looks – click through to keep reading.

Saw the theme, loved the theme, totally ran with it!Sarah-Jessica-Parker-h-and-

There can only be one winner and I think it is always Sarah Jessica Parker, she never shies away from a Met Gala theme, and she does love a dramatic headpiece. The Sex and the City star designed her look in collaboration with H&M, yep that high street fashion chain, to create an exquisite one-shoulder black silk dress with a draped train embroidered with scarlet poppies, which was topped off with a statement-making Philip Treacy headpiece and Fred Leighton jewels.

When I was thinking Chinese-themed I was hoping that someone was going to do embroidered well, and I have to be honest I was more than a little surprised that it was Prada, but this is one elegant look that they created for Emily Blunt.

I love the steal blue colour of her gown it really works perfectly with the crystal and glass bead ramage embroidery, and I know some people on my Twitter feed weren’t loving the matching cape in a navy colour, but I adore it really adds a dramatic flair to an elegant look.

Youthful ClassZendaya

This is how to make an impression at your first Met Gala, stay true to the theme while also rocking your own style, I really think Zendaya nailed it in this stunning Fausto Puglisi gown, plus it was so nice to see a youthful look on the red carpet. The crimson silk duchesse asymmetric skirt hand-embroidered with crystal and velvet sun motifs was just so perfect for her and the occasion. This girl really is a style icon in the making.

Leave it to Rihanna to make the biggest statement, and I mean that literally, her gorgeous Guo Pei Couture gown needed three assistants to help her get about, god knows how she managed to sit down for the meal.

I’m not going to lie and say I adore this gown, I have to go with it looking a little too much like Big Bird for me, but I can see that she went with the theme and decided to go big, plus she was one of the few that actually wore a Chinese designer.

This isn’t my favourite look, I think I am totally done with this sheer trend, but I had to include as this image is getting printed out and being put on my fridge as my latest gymspiration, as no matter what you can’t deny how incredible Beyonce looks in this custom Givenchy Couture gown.

Gold beautydonna-karan-gold

There were a lot of gold numbers, from Kate Hudson in Michael Kors to Anne Hathaway in Ralph Lauren Collection, but I have to give it to Lizzy Caplan, this Donna Karan Atelier, single-shoulder draped gown with beaded fringe and flower embroidery is divine. I love that it is more subtle in colour, like liquid gold than the others, and as always with Donna Karan the draping is perfection.

So not on theme, but wow, wow, wowdvf-instagram

One last one, the gorgeous Kate Beckinsale draped in a DVF gown, so not on theme, but hey how perfectly formed is this dress to her body, she looks incredible. I have to say I don’t care that it isn’t big on drama or Chinese-inspired I love this colour and gown on her.
