I have a love for old movies, I love the innocence, the storytelling, and most of all the beauty of the costumes. I promised at the start of the year more of these fashion pieces, it hasn’t quite panned out as I have planned, but I have a great one today discussing the incredible costumes Audrey Hepburn wears in her movie, Paris When It Sizzles from 1964.

The movie itself isn’t a classic, it was actually panned when it came out, the story can be quite hard to follow and the chemistry doesn’t seem quite there between Hepburn’s character Gabrielle Simpson and William Holden as Richard Benson, but it’s in Paris, who doesn’t love to see the Eiffel Tower.

For me what makes this movie stand out is its fashion as Hepburn got her good friend Hubert de Givenchy to create all of her looks, and he didn’t stop at just her outfits as he also made her an exclusive fragrance, which she insisted he also be recognised for in the credits, when you watch keep going until the end if you don’t believe me.

Back to the fashion, the first Hepburn looks is a mint green skirt suit, this is so Parisian chic that it really does start off the film’s costumes perfectly. I love the way this look is styled, with a white hat and ballet flats, so very 60s, and now timeless. But it’s the details of this look that makes it for me, the big covered buttons, the pocket details, and the three-quarter sleeves.

The looks just keep getting better, next up is possible one of my favourite looks of the film, her orange dress, featuring a cute collar and bow detailing at the waist, then when you see the dress from the back you see the stunning scoop back detailing. The colour and the detailing making this simple shift dress really standout, and I love that it wasn’t overly styled just cute kitten pointy heels, pearl earrings, a cream bag and a gorgeous large brim straw hat.

One of the most fun and whimsical looks has to be the blue lacy nightgown scene, I adore the cape detail and the lace pattern on the sleeves, the way it flows on screen is perfection, so enchanting and ethereal. Doesn’t it just make you want to go back in time to when nightwear was so dreamy?

This silhouette flows throughout the movie, simple, chic and elegant, very Parisian with a timeless vibe, it is kind of what we now think of when looking back at Audrey Hepburn’s style, and I adore how this ivory coloured bell shape skirt, nipped in at the waist with a blue belt, is contrasted with the oversized masculine collar.

It may be a silly film, it jumps around a lot, but there is something charming about it, which definitely comes across in the final look, a gorgeous pink dress with a matching pink purse and bow in her hair, and worn with elbow-length white gloves, probably where Amal Clooney got  the idea for her Oscar look!!!

Everything about the outfits in ‘Paris When It Sizzles’ are tres chic and so very Parisian, but what gets me the most is that if you saw these dresses today in the shop you’d think they were modern and elegant, the costumes in this film are so timeless, Givenchy really knew what he was doing.

Have you seen this crazy movie and what did you think of the costumes Audrey Hepburn wears?
