LFW SS16: Markus Lupfer – Mexicana

For spring/summer 2016 the designer, best known for his sequin knits, seems to have grown up with a feminine collection filled with sheer dresses embellished with pretty embroidery, laidback separates including adorable bomber jackets mostly in a monochrome colour palette, camisoles and loose trousers, all inspired by the Mexican wilderness.

Even with a more feminine collection there was still the Markus Lupfer humour, with lace and sheer organza tops and bombers embellished and printed with a Mexican luchador wearing a traditional wrestling mask holding a flower, I can only imagine that there is a jumper line to come featuring the wrestling mask that his fans are going to rush to buy.

The inspiration of a barren wasteland coming to life was a great backdrop for this collection, which took the contrasts found in the deserts of Mexico, and I love the floral garden surrounding the models. However, it was the light and dark theme running through this collection that capture my attention, I loved the graphic flowers showcased on stripes, as well the 3D sequin embellishments on the dainty party dresses, which were meant to resemble a blooming desert. Seeing the slouchy, but girlie silhouettes all together really made a statement, and I love that there was the occasional pink hue mixed in with the monochrome.

Highlights for me had to be the accessories, the star-shaped sunglasses and the statement slip-ons, as well as the sheer organza bomber. The Markus Lupfer girl may be growing up but it’s nice to see that the humour that made the brand isn’t going anywhere.
