Do you prefer tea or coffee? For me, it is all about tea, I collect different teas just like I do vintage crockery. I love how different blends have different health benefits, can enhance my mood and help me sleep better. Not to mention – tea tastes great. There are so many different kinds of tea that I enjoy, but recently I’ve been getting into herbal varieties to improve my wellbeing. My latest discovery is Hibso Hibiscus Tea, a deep magenta drink that has a sour refreshing taste similar to cranberries.
One thing we already know is that tea is good for you, especially green and black, well, now you can add hibiscus to your drink well list, as the Hibiscus flower, also known as Roselle or Karkade, which originated in North Africa and Southeast Asia is a great addition to any tea collection, as not only does it have numerous health benefits – it can be enjoyed hot or cold.

Hibso Hibiscus Tea is a perfect all-weather, any-time-of-day kind of tea that it is simple to make as one sachet is one drink, all you need to do is add 200 ml of hot or cold water. While I’m normally a tea leaf kind of drinker, I do love that these sachets make it very easy and convenient, plus it comes in four flavours – original, mint, lemon, and ginger.
I think my favourite has to be the original, but the mint has a refreshing kick to it, and I love any tea with a hint of lemon, I’m always adding lemon slices to my drinks. The instructions also say you can add sugar or honey to enhance the taste, but I didn’t think it needed any more sweetness to it, I thought it had the right balance of sweet and tart.

Hibiscus Tea – served hot or cold
When it comes to what’s best hot or cold, I would say it depends on the weather. I really enjoy it warm, I think it has a great pick-me-up feel about it. Trust me, try swapping out your English Breakfast for hibiscus you will be surprised by how energised you feel.
But to be honest, I think this herbal tea comes into its own in the warmer, summer months as it makes a delicious iced tea or as a sangria base.
Want to try it cold – my tip would be to brew it with hot water, I think it is easier to mix the dried powder. Just remember to let it cool before adding to the fridge. When fully chilled serve over ice cubes with a sprig of fresh mint. Prefer a fizz, try mixing with lemonade.
Brewed and cooled Hibiscus tea can also be used as a sangria base for a fun cocktail in the summer. Just add chopped fruit and berries for a healthy punch. Want to add alcohol? Try orange-flavoured liqueur and Prosecco for a light, refreshing sangria with a fizz, or go traditional and add red wine. For something, a little different try adding hibiscus to vodka with a squeeze of lime and honey.
