Stanwell House Hotel In Lymington, New Forest

Stanwell House, dog-friendly hotel, Lymington, New Forest, Hotel Review, Hotel in New Forest

Described as a boutique hotel, Stanwell House in the heart of Lymington is a tale of two halves. The communal areas, like the dining, lounge and bar, are inviting with elegant and quirky touches, while our room was tired and unloved and certainly didn’t warrant the £160 a night price tag.

We stayed here for one night as we had a wedding nearby, so luckily we didn’t have to spend much time in the room, which was good really as it wasn’t that nice. At first glance, everything looks nice, but on closer inspection, the room was very tired. Our shower was held together with an elastic band, the tap was wobbly, the furniture had broken knobs and chips, and the pillows were terrible.

Ours was classed as a standard double garden room (number 5) and granted it did have outdoor access, but when we arrived it also had people sat enjoying a bite to eat outside our window, as the terrace our doors open up onto is also part of the hotel’s outdoor dining. So not very private, and keeping the curtains closed made the room very dark. When we’ve had garden rooms before at other hotels there has been a garden for us to enjoy.

Also, as the hotel is located in a Georgian building I was expecting period character details in the rooms, but sadly not ours. Other rooms on the website have four-poster beds and antique furniture.

One good thing to note is that this is a very dog-friendly hotel, with a number of room options to choose from, and you can even eat with your pooch in certain sections of the hotel, such as the conservatory, and of course in the garden.

Dog friendly Stanwell House Hotel in the New Forest

What did impress me about this boutique hotel was the communal areas, I loved the interior touches that highlighted the beautiful architectural features, from the light and airy conservatory offering a spot to have lunch, afternoon tea and a coffee, complete with a Friends-style sofa set-up to a cosy lounge with a literary theme featuring leather sofas, bookshelves wallpaper, exposed brickwork, stripped boards and a typewriter. I also adored the rustic tables in the Burcher bistro.

Breakfast at Stanwell House Hotel

We didn’t have the chance to eat at the restaurant for lunch, dinner or even afternoon tea, which is a shame as the menu did look impressive, but we did have breakfast. You can opt for a cold selection with cereal, toast, pastries, fruits and yoghurts, or a cooked breakfast, such as a full English, for meat lovers and vegetarians, complete with eggs your way, scrambled, fried or poached, or a vegan option with a bubble and squeak potato cake. There are also pancakes, smashed avocado, smoked salmon and scrambled eggs or porridge on the menu.

I went for pancakes, supposed to be a short stake of 3, I was a little short-changed and only got 2, which was a shame as they were tasty. My husband opted for the full English, which came with a Cumberland sausage, bacon, black pudding, mushrooms, tomato, beans, hash brown, poached egg and toast.

Would I stay again?

Now, when it comes to whether I would stay again, I’d have to say no, sadly. It is such a shame, as the location is good, Lymington is cute with a lovely array of independent shops and a gorgeous marina to wander around. However, I wanted more from this £160 a night hotel. Yes, it was August, so it is at the high-end of the season, but the rooms didn’t match the high standards in the rest of the hotel.

I really wanted to love this hotel as it would be perfect to come back to with Falcon to see friends, but I think we will have to keep looking for a great dog-friendly hotel in the New Forest.

Another thing to note, Stanwell House Hotel does have a car park, however, it is tiny and people do park stupidly, which doesn’t help. It is next to Lymington’s long-stay car park so you will definitely find somewhere to park, you might just have to pay for it.
