I’m sure I say this about every season, but there is something special about summer, especially a sunny summer, which we don’t always get here in the blighty. Now, I’m not a sun worshipper, I actually get bored if I’m just lying out in the sun for too long, but having a summer glow really does uplift my mood. I just love that feeling when I open my eyes and the sun is streaming through the curtains in the morning, I don’t know why but it instantly makes me think it is going to be a good day. I don’t know about you – but I’ve really needed this burst of sun.

I also love that summer means I can be outside even more than usual. Take a day trip to the beach, visit a fabulous garden, go for a bike ride, have an alfresco dinner on the patio, go fruit picking, tend to my cut flower garden, or simply read a book under a tree in the garden with ice cream. You know simple pleasures.

My go-to summer activities

Fancy making the most of your summer, here are my top things to do:

Head to the beach

One of the main reasons for our move to where we are in Kent is to be closer to the beach. We are about a 10-20 minute drive from so many wonderful beaches – from glorious stretches of sand to pebbles and dunes. There is something restorative about just listening to the waves crash in. Plus, seeing Falcon swimming about trying to catch up with seagulls is the cutest thing you’ll ever see, his tail even wags while he is swimming.

Stock up the freezer with ice cream or make your own ice lollies

I love that summer means ice lollies and ice cream. Yes, you can buy them in, I do love a Feast and Cornetto, but there is something fun about making your own ice lollies. All you need is an ice lolly mould and some imagination. My go-to are these Matcha Tea Berry Ice Lollies, which I featured on my blog a few years back that I regularly make. Also, try adding Vimto and lemonade, lemonade and fruit pieces, or coconut and pineapple juice for a refreshing break from the heat.

Stoke up the BBQ/ Pizza Oven

My husband loves to get his BBQ on, no matter the weather, but in summer he probably lights it a few times a week. This summer we also added an Ooni Pizza Oven to the mix and it has definitely been worth it. There is something about going alfresco that just makes any meal taste better.

Going on a cycle ride

A couple of years ago I got a bike for my birthday, it was the best present ever. I love adding my journal, camera, a little snack and a giant bottle of water to my cute basket and heading off for a cycle. I’m not the most confident of cyclists, but I do enjoy it, so I’m trying to push myself to go a little further each ride.

Have an adventure

The summer should be fun, and planning an adventure is always high on my to-do list. Whether it’s a day trip, a road trip, or a holiday abroad. Use the sunshine to inspire you to take it easy.

Visit a garden

This is a good tip, no matter the season, but I love visiting local gardens in the summer to get inspiration for what I can achieve in mine. My garden has been a sanctuary in recent years and I’m excited to keep developing it, and visiting stately homes I come away with so many ideas.

Buy yourself a new summer dress

I don’t buy as many clothes as I used to, I’m really trying to style up my wardrobe more. But I do like to add one new summer dress to the mix, as I live in floaty dresses from June until September. My go-to place has to be Nobody’s Child, I’ve lost count of how many I have, but when you find a brand you love why not buy it in every style and colour!!! Also, check out Baukjen, Olivia Rubin, Arket, and Hush.
