Everywhere I turn I keep seeing culottes, love or hate them they really are the trouser-of-the-moment, and I can’t decide whether to get on board or not, which of course can only mean one thing, pin lots of pictures and get obsessed until I give in!!!
The first time I thought ‘yeah culottes I like your wide-legged, cropped trouser style’ had to be when I saw these suede beauties, above, from Theory’s spring/summer 2015 collection, aren’t they dreamy. Then doubts streamed in that I so wouldn’t be able to pull those off, or even find them at a more affordable high street price tag, which I have checked out this identical pair from Asos, but still I couldn’t commit they’ve been in my saved folder for weeks.
With both Victoria Beckham and Olivia Palermo taking the trend by storm, see them here, it has made me reconsider, I do love the bold silhouette, but I can’t help but be a little scared by it as well, as over the years they really have been thought of by most as dowdy and unflattering. It doesn’t help either that there are so many options – straight-legged, baggy, ones with pleats, and then there are ones that just fan our like skirts.
I have come to think of culottes like a midi skirt, as it took me a while to really love those as well, they basically work with the same styling tricks – wear with heels, cropped jumpers and tops, or go simple with a white tee or shirt. I also think that rules are meant to be broken and I have found lots of inspiration via Pinterest with gorgeous women wearing culottes with flats, oversized boxy tops, leather jackets, coordinated pieces, and blazers.
So if like me you are still on the fence I have put together a selection of my favourites from Topshop, Asos, River Island, New Look, Whistles, Reiss, Missguided and Boohoo. When it is a trend you aren’t sure about I always feel that going for a block colour with clean lines is best, but I have to admit that some of the colourful print designs really do suit this bold silhouette. Here are 20 pairs to get excited about – be brave and give them a go:
