Colourful Knitwear & Glorious Bluebells

What makes you think of spring? Blossom? Daffodils? Or maybe bluebells? I actually, want to check all three boxes as each one gives me spring vibes, but there’s something special about seeing a carpet of bluebells that gives me that extra spring in my step, plus I do love a tranquil walk through the woods, and so does little Falcon. Admittedly it isn’t feeling very spring-like at the moment is it? So cold, but thankfully I have my trusty new chunky cardigan from Woolovers, which I may be a little obsessed with as it is the cosiest knit ever, and you can’t go wrong with a touch of pink to cheer up an outfit can you.

I’m a big lover of knitwear, it probably makes up a good chunk of my wardrobe, like bags, you can’t have too many knits can you, there’s a versatile and longevity to a good quality knit. One of the things I’ve been considering lately with my wardrobe is to add mainly quality pieces that will last. Don’t get me wrong I love a cheeky Primark purchase, but I would love to ensure that my wardrobe was more timeless, that I’m wasting less, and adding in knits from Woolovers is certainly a good investment.

What to look out for to get great quality knitwear?

Check the label. Sounds simple enough but a lot of knits are blends of fibres such as cotton/viscose/polyester – look for 100% cotton or cashmere, or one of my favourite blends has to be 20% cashmere with 80% merino for a super soft and luxurious knit. They will feel nicer, keep their shape longer, well as long as you look after them, and I always find they just feel and sit much better than cheaper options.

Wash them correctly. One of the things I live by when it comes to quality pieces in my wardrobe is to wash them on the right setting, not just the easiest or quickest, and I certainly don’t leave it to my husband, last time I did that my teddy got the most expensive jumper ever.

If your knit is made from natural fibres that it is probably OK to go in the washing machine. Do double check your label to be sure, but most of mine are machine-washable and I always wash on the wool programme. I also always use a non-bio detergent, reduce my spin speed to around 600 rpm and opt for a lower temperature, no more than 30°. Also, check out Ecover Wool Wash it is a great delicate laundry cleaner.

Don’t over wash. OK, stick with me, like with my jeans I don’t like to wash my knits too much, instead, I use my steamer to get rid of odours, it’s like a way of washing my knits between actual washes, if you get what I mean. I also use The Laundress Wool & Cashmere spray as the special formula refreshes and deodorises my knits and it has antibacterial properties and is a great moth repellent. Plus, its sandalwood, orange, rose, and cedar blend is dreamy.

Buy vintage. I have a lot of knits that are amazing quality that I’ve picked up at vintage shops over the years. If they’ve kept their shape for the past 20 years or so they are going to keep doing it for you if you look after them.

Fold don’t hang. I wish I had the room to do this for all my knits, I don’t, but I do try to make sure I fold them away rather than hang in my wardrobe as they keep their shape better.

Do you have any tips for keeping your knitwear in great shape?
