Autumn, fall, whatever you call it, I just adore, I love the changing of the colours, embracing warmer layers, and just getting cosy in front of the fire, with hot chocolate and a good book. For me, there has always been something magical about autumn, a time to reflect and slow down a little, before the craziness and fun of Christmas.
To give you a little helping hand this autumn, I’ve come up with the ultimate bucket list, filled with all my favourite autumnal activities.
8 Things to do this Autumn
Get outside and enjoy the colours – I love summer for getting outdoors, but autumn really is the prettiest, it is generally dry, still light, and I do love seeing the changing seasons and the leaves turning from green to golden. Head out into the countryside, go on a long walk, followed by a roast dinner at a rustic pub.
Get ready for pumpkin season – Halloween is just around the corner, and whether you are going full out by dressing the house or doing fancy dress, one way you can get involved is going to a pumpkin patch. We are fortunate to have a pumpkin patch near us, I love going and finding the best pumpkins, the cute squashes and bringing them home to line the driveway and paths, and even carving a few to add a light inside. It also means that I can perfect my pumpkin soup recipe.
Start a games night – I was just kindly gifted a whole box of goodies from GiffGaff to create the ultimate games night, complete with fun board games, a takeaway voucher, a camera to catch all the action, and even a trophy. Such a cute and fun idea that I got my friends together and I think it is going to a regular thing, with each of us taking turns to host, to choose the board game and food. For me, it has to be classic board games, I don’t think you can go wrong with Monopoly, Cluedo or Trival Pursuits. But be warned a games night can get a little competitive.
Go apple picking/blackberry foraging – autumn is full of fun things, but apple picking and foraging for blackberries is one of my favourite things. There is something extra special about picking it yourself, we scour hedgerows around our village religiously for blackberries, I have so many recipes from crumble to tarts and there is nothing more comforting than a homemade dessert drizzled with custard!
Host Bonfire Night – Remember, remember the 5th of November. I’ve always loved Bonfire Night, with the fireworks, the toffee apples and hot chocolate – but even more so now that my husband goes all out – he puts on the most fabulous fireworks display that it really has become an all-night affair, complete with chilli, hot chocolate, and s’mores around the firepit.
Do a big clear out – the change of seasons is the perfect time for a clean start and for autumn that means doing the rotation in my wardrobe, putting summer away and reorganising my knits and coats. I find it therapeutic decluttering, whether it is my wardrobe, the kitchen cupboards, my make-up pile in the bathroom, or my stack of magazines in my office.
Soup season – autumn means I have a craving for hearty soup, stews, and chilli, you know cosy comfort food that’s good for you. My classic is chunky minestrone, I always make more than I need so I can put in the freezer for those days when I need an extra boost. I also love Pinterest when it comes to finding new recipes, I have a special board filled with my favourites, for some reason this year I’m all about tomato soup.
Create a cosy home – autumn is the cosy season, I love that moment when I light the fire for the first time and just watch it flicker, always so beautiful. I also switch up my decor, add more blankets, cushions, dried flower arrangements, pinecones, and of course, autumnal scented candles.
Host a movie night – you’ve created the ultimate cosy home, now you need a movie marathon. What about all the Harry Potter movies, or classic flicks like When Harry Met Sally, You’ve Got Mail and Maid in Manhatten, or go all Halloween with Hocus Pocus, Practical Magic and Beetlejuice, or if like me you love a teen romance, try Cinderella Story, She’s All That, or To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before with the dreamy Noah Centineo. Better still turn on Netflix and see what’s new.
