When you think of a Mulberry bag that you completely lusted over – I bet most of you will be saying to yourself the Alexa, or the Bayswater, another one of my favs. Well to celebrate its 50th anniversary, the British label is bringing back the Alexa, its iconic slouchy satchel-style bag inspired by Alexa Chung’s vintage and quirky style.

When it launched in 2010, (yes, a crazy 10 years ago, seriously time has gone by so quickly), I was a little obsessed. The Alexa was an instant hit, the ultimate of ‘It’ bags, and really did mark the peak of the then creative director Emma Hill’s reign, and basically, if you didn’t own one, you wanted one.

I always wanted one. But, because it got so popular, the prices rocketed, and then in 2017, it was discontinued. I have to be honest it is still one of those bags I wish I had snagged. Well, it seems that Mulberry is shining down on me, as I get another chance – as the Alexa is back.

The Mulberry Alexa is back!

As with the original Alexa collection, the style is available in three sizes, from the mini (£895) to the oversized (£1,350), meaning you will agonise over which size to go for. Of course, the bags come in various finishes, from heavy grain to metallic Buffalo, and there are a lot of colours to choose from, including the brand’s signature Mulberry Green, as well as joyful neon shades, and tranquil, earthy neutrals, oh hello, dreamy Chestnut – classic and timeless.

There is one big difference this time around, the Mulberry Alexa has gone sustainable. The range is made with leather from gold-standard, environmentally accredited tanneries and has been crafted at the brand’s carbon-neutral UK factories.

Mulberry has combined all that sustainable goodness with the same iconic slouchy shape, tactile leather and traditional detailing – from the braided top handle to double strap closure. Serious dreamy – I just adore how it is part vintage, part modern, and now part sustainable. I wish more brands would give their cult classics a sustainable revamp.

Now the only questions remaining – which size and colour? I’m drawn to the fun pops of colour, the neon pink coming for the festive season and the stunning porcelain blue hue that looks perfect as a mini Alexa. However, I think this is a bag that requires timeless appeal. Yes, black would go with everything, but I’m not really a black bag kind of gal, I’m thinking it is between the warmth of the Chestnut and the luxurious Chalk.

If I need any more justification that I need a Mulberry Alexa in my life, I now live in a house called Mulberry – it is fate really!!!
