It’s starting to look a lot like spring. Blue skies, daffodils in bloom, waking up to a chorus of birds and seeing the fields around our village occupied by tiny lambs playing. After a long winter, especially a lockdown winter, seeing green shoots of spring is really uplifting my mood at the moment, and it has been so nice getting outdoors in the garden again. A daily walk is great, but there is something rejuvenating about being outdoors all day, which is what I’ve been doing most weekends this month – it really has been wonderful.
8 Things I Love About Spring
- First pop of colour appearing in the garden. The daffodils and crocuses really cheer me up. I’ve already put a note in my journal to plant more bulbs this autumn for more colour next year.
- Spring means Easter, which in turn means chocolate, baking and in normal years, family gatherings. This Easter though I will just probably be making lots of cakes. My favourite has to be cornflake cakes topped with mini eggs. The secret is adding a dash of orange to your chocolate mix for a lovely zesty kick.
- Lighter evenings. Yes, you might lose an hour of sleep, but being able to go for a walk after dinner makes up for it. I don’t know what it is, maybe the increased Vitamin D, but the clocks going forward gives me a mental and physical boost.
- Getting back out on my bike. I have a glorious, vintage-style bike named Mavis. Yes, I’m one of those that name objects. My bike was a birthday present one year and I just adore her, having a wander really brings such joy. I don’t go too far, and major roads still scare me, but maybe I will be a little braver this spring.
- Picnic season. This spring, picnic season really takes on a new life, with outdoor gatherings only for the foreseeable. But there is something special about packing up sandwiches and nibbles in a wicker basket and venturing out somewhere pretty and meeting up with friends. To be honest, I also do regular picnics in our garden as well as I don’t need much of an excuse to get the picnic blanket out – there is something so relaxing and romantic about a picnic.
- Discovering new walks. Daily walks with Falcon have kept me sane throughout the last 12-months, but now with lockdown lifting slightly, combined with nicer weather it means we can venture a little further afield while still staying local. I can’t wait to visit Rye Nature Reserve again, the White Cliffs, and the many beaches around near where we live.
- Sowing seeds for the year ahead. My new love of gardening has gone up a notch this spring with the arrival of my greenhouse and I have started growing my own vegetables and flowers from seeds. So far, I’ve done my sweet peas, tomatoes, radishes, lettuce, cornflowers, asters, and cosmos. I just can’t wait for them all to be strong enough to be planted outside.
- Seeing all the cute lambies. Living on the marshes in Kent means there are lots of sheep, which come spring means lots of adorable lambs. On our regular walks, we have been watching the lambs grow up so quickly, be naughty escaping their fields, as well as snooze in the sun.
